Today in the EU, the expression research and development is gradually being replaced by research, development and innovations, in other words, science should be performed according to the actual needs of a given society and its economy. It is one of the reasons why implementation of new inventions and technologies into social and economic life is the priority of the European Union and its member states.
Basic and applied research should therefore be linked with reasonable R&D policy in a way to ensure achieving top scientific results and their effective implementation, while under suitable measures there is no need for conflict between these two forms of research. It is effective implementation of new inventions and technologies that outlines the significant importance of science for the development and prosperity of society and is one of the basic conditions of upgrading living standards in general.
Transfer of new knowledge and technologies into social and economic life for the purpose of innovations within R&D is of horizontal character and is not adequately developed in Slovakia. Each research institution that effectively use opportunities given by transfer of new inventions and technologies could multiply its financial resources and earn from possessing intellectual property - not to speak about the economic value added for society and economy.
